Festas do Mar in Cascais

Cascais' biggest party of the year is on: free concerts on the bay every night until 30 August, with Daniela Mercury, Diogo Piçarra, David Fonseca and more. Here is our recipe for the perfect festival day, and it starts on the water.

Every August, Cascais throws its biggest party of the year, and it is happening right now. The Festas do Mar have taken over the bay: a huge stage by the water, food and craft stalls from the Baía de Cascais to the Jardim Visconde da Luz and the Cidadela, and free concerts every night from some of the biggest names in Portuguese music.

We can see the stage from the marina. Literally. So let us tell you what is on, and then make the case for the best festival day plan in town.

What are the Festas do Mar?

The Festas do Mar are Cascais' traditional summer festival, a celebration of the town's fishing roots that has grown into one of the biggest free music events in Portugal. The 2026 edition runs from 20 to 30 August, with concerts on the nights of 20–23 and 27–30 August on the Palco Cascais, right on the bay. Entry is completely free.

The lineup is serious: Daniela Mercury, Carlão, Marisa Liz, Os Quatro e Meia, Diogo Piçarra, Dillaz, João Pedro Pais, David Fonseca and Matias Damásio, among others, with a fado night on the 27th and the Sinfónica de Cascais closing the festival on the 30th. Concerts run at roughly 19:00, 20:15 and 22:15 each night, and there are afternoon shows for kids (Bluey, Peppa and friends) at 17:00 on the weekends. On the final Sunday, the traditional procession of Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes crosses the bay, a reminder of what this festival has always been about: this town and its sea.

Between concerts, the whole waterfront turns into a fair of street food, gastronomy and local craft. Expect Cascais at its liveliest.

Boat by day, concert by night: the perfect Cascais plan

Here is the thing about the Festas do Mar: the concerts are at night. Which leaves you a whole summer day to fill, in a town that will be busier than at any other point of the year. The beaches will be packed. The terraces will be packed.

The water will not be.

So this is our plan, and we genuinely think it is the best one in town. Spend the afternoon on a boat. Cruise out of Marina de Cascais along the cliffs, drop anchor in a clear-water cove toward Guincho, swim, float, have a drink on deck while the town fills up behind you. The sea is at its warmest and calmest right now, and from the water you get the best seat in Cascais: the whole bay in front of you, stage and all, slowly getting ready for the night.

Then comes the part that makes it perfect. Step off the boat and the festival is a five-minute walk from our berth. No parking, no train timetable, no drive. You tie up, walk along the marina wall, and you are at the free concerts by the first chords of the 19:00 show. Dinner from the festival stalls, music until midnight, and the day never had a dull hour in it.

If you are doing it with kids, flip it around: catch the 17:00 kids' show first and take the morning coastal cruise instead. And if you would rather time your day so the golden hour happens on the water and the concert right after, a sunset cruise landing just before showtime is about as good as an August evening gets. As always, every trip is private: one group, one boat, captain and fuel included. If your group has its own idea for the day, tell us the occasion and we will shape it around the festival.

The practical bits

  • Dates: 20–30 August 2026, concerts on 20–23 and 27–30 August.
  • Where: Palco Cascais on the Baía de Cascais, with stalls through the Jardim Visconde da Luz and the Cidadela.
  • Cost: free entry, no tickets needed.
  • Getting there: the town fills up, so the official advice is to skip the car. The train from Lisbon leaves you a short walk from the bay. And if you are coming with us, the stage is five minutes on foot from Marina de Cascais.

The festival runs until 30 August

There are still festival days ahead, and the last weekend, with João Pedro Pais, David Fonseca and Matias Damásio, is shaping up to be a big one. If you want the water-then-music version of it, send us your dates and Miguel will get back to you directly, usually within a few hours, with availability for your afternoon at sea.

See you on the water. And then at the concert.
