What an endless summer

Summer was supposed to end in September. It did not. October brought the same sun, the same flat sea and the same full calendar, and we have been running charters out of Cascais exactly as we did in July. A note on the season that would not quit, and what comes next.

Every year we write a September post that says the locals' secret is that summer stretches a little further than the calendar admits. This year the secret got out of hand. September rolled into October and nothing changed: the sun kept coming up warm, the wind stayed away, and the sea off Cascais stayed as flat and blue as it had been in the middle of August. We kept the boat in the water and we kept going out.

So this is a thank-you note to a season that refused to end, and a few words on what happens now that the air is finally starting to turn.

October, running like July

Through the whole of this month we ran charters the way we run them in high summer. Morning coastal cruises with a swim stop in the coves toward Guincho, where the water was still warm enough that nobody hesitated at the ladder. Afternoons along the cliffs with the lighthouse going past and the Sintra hills sharp behind it. Sunset cruises that sat inside the golden hour, which in October comes early enough that you are back in the marina in time for dinner.

The photo above is from one of those evenings: late light on the water, a warm breeze, and a guest who had clearly stopped thinking about the date. That is October on this coast when the weather plays along, and this year it played along for weeks.

Temperatures have dipped a little now, and the mornings ask for a jumper on the walk down the pontoon. But the sun is still out, the sea is still calm, and we are still going out on it.

A full day for two

Just the other day we took a couple out for a full day on the boat, lunch included. Off the berth in the morning, the coast west with the water to themselves, a long swim at anchor, and lunch served onboard with nowhere to be. In summer a day like that shares the coast with every other boat in the marina. In late October they had the bay almost entirely to themselves, with the same sun they would have had in July.

It is the quiet argument for autumn here. The weather is often as good, the sea is calmer than most people expect, and the coast is empty. If you want a tailor-made day built around lunch at anchor, or the four-hour Cascais cruise with a swim, this is a wonderful time of year to do it.

A short film about why we do this

At the end of September, with the season still in full swing, we made a short film called "Welcome to Nautivent". It is Miguel, on the boat and in the marina, talking about what we do here and why: the people who step aboard, the coast we get to show them, and how rewarding and genuinely humbling it is to do this for a living. If you have ever wondered who you are booking with, this is the honest answer, in a few minutes.

We do not stop for winter

Here is something not everyone knows about us: we have never been a summer-only operation. Nautivent runs charters all year, and always has. The coast does not close in November, and some of the clearest, stillest days we see are in the months most visitors never think to ask about. A winter morning on this water, with the haze gone and the Sintra hills close enough to touch, is its own kind of special.

The team is now getting ready for the winter season. The boat gets her off-season attention, the crew gets a breather, and the calendar stays open. If you are in Cascais between now and spring and the forecast is kind, a coastal cruise, a sunset cruise or the full run to Lisbon is just as bookable as it was in August. Private as always: one group, one boat, up to six guests, captain and fuel included.

New Year's Eve, and 2027

Two things we are working on, with details coming soon. The first is New Year's Eve: there is no better seat for the fireworks over the bay than a boat, and we are putting together something for the night. The second is 2027. We have been taking notes all season on what our guests loved most, and the plans for next year are starting to take shape. Keep an eye on the journal and our newsletter for both.

In the meantime, if someone you know would love a day on this water, a Nautivent gift card lets them pick their own sunny day, whichever season it lands in.

Book your autumn day

The endless summer is winding down, but the boat is not. If the forecast looks good and you have a free morning, afternoon or evening, send us your dates and Miguel will get back to you directly, usually within a few hours, with availability and a plan shaped around your day.

Thank you, summer. You were longer than anyone expected and we enjoyed every bit of it. See you out there.
